Karen R. Crothers

Assistant Director

The Packer Engineering Knowledge Services provides in-depth reference and research services to engineers, their clients, and outside clients, covering a wide range of engineering solutions, including: automotive, aviation, body mechanics, chemical, construction, environmental, failure analysis and recovery, fires and explosions, machinery and transportation. The collection is particularly strong in both current and historical standards, fire information and automobile information. As Information Specialist, Ms. Crothers provides information assistance and conducts research for engineers and support staff, uses local and external technical databases to search various engineering subjects for current and historical technical data, and compiles bibliographies and research reports of print and Web materials.

Prior to joining Packer Engineering, Ms. Crothers worked at local libraries, including National Louis University, West Chicago Public Library District and the Bartlett Public Library District. Ms. Crothers has served as department head for the Circulation and Technical Services departments. She assisted library users with information requests and computer searches, provided support and training for the public in computer operations and the life cycle management of periodicals. Ms. Crothers was involved in the successful automation of library operations using the Data Research Associates integrated library system as part of the Du Page Library System's Library Integrated Network Consortium.

Ms. Crothers also worked on several referendums with the West Chicago Public Library District, the last of which resulted in a new library building being built.

Ms. Crothers is an aviation student, pursuing her Private Pilot Single Engine Land License, with time in Cessna 172's. She serves as Secretary on the board of Packer Wings, NFP, whose mission is dedicated to educating future generations of aviators, engineers, scientists and mechanics. She is also a board member of the local Windy City chapter of Women in Aviation, International.
