Thomas E. Long
Sr. TechnologistMr. Long is experienced in failure analysis, product development, product design and product integrity studies. He has been actively involved in laser scanning since 2002 and his primary responsibilities since 1993 have included computer-aided design, three-dimensional surface and solid modeling, digitizing of objects for reverse engineering and computer animation/simulations.
Since joining Packer Engineering in 1982, Mr. Long's extensive laboratory and field experience has included automobile, motorcycle and off-road vehicle crash testing, field inspections, accident reconstruction, vehicle preparation and site documentation using digital surveying equipment. He has worked with instrumentation, strain gaging, transducer preparation and calibration, and computer data acquisition systems for the measurements of acceleration, force, temperature, pressure, strain and displacement. He also leads the video taping and digital editing department.
Mr. Long has been actively involved in gear design and testing. He is experienced in computer evaluation of engineering data and preparation of information for courtroom graphic presentations. He has been active in gun investigations, including rifles, muzzle loading rifles, shotguns, handguns, powderless air/CO2 rifles and marking pistols, and is currently certified by the State of California for handgun testing. His experience includes accident reconstruction, gun safety, operation, mechanisms, barrel failure, failure analysis and ammunition.
Prior to joining Packer Engineering, Mr. Long was employed at Charles C. Kawin Metallurgical Laboratory as a senior mechanical testing technician. His responsibilities included machining, testing and an extensive amount of procedures for the evaluation of a wide variety of materials. He is a certified welder and machinist.
